Beta Pi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was the first sorority to be organized in Sumter County.
Chapter Historical Facts:
- The chapter organized, in 1946, at the home of Mrs. Pearl Prince Brown, 325 West Bartlette Street, Sumter, South Carolina 29150, under the direction of Soror Madge Hopper. Soror Hopper at that time was Director of the Southeastern Region.
- The charter members were Soror Lula Davis, Soror Helen Walker, Soror Louise Beaver, Soror Julia Mae Bailey, and Soror Ola Adams.
- The people responsible for spearheading the organization were the charter members. The ceremony was very impressive and was highlighted by a luncheon.
- The first officers were: Soror Helen Walker, Basileus; Soror Lula Davis, Second Anti-Basileus; Soror Louise Beaver, Grammateus; Soror Ola Adams, Tamias; and Soror Julia Mae Bailey, Phylacter.
